My name is Thao and I am the daughter of Vietnamese refugees. Wanting
to escape from communism, my parents, along with their three children,
fled from Vietnam in 1981. Known as the "boat people," my parents
successfully made it to the refugee camps in Thailand. From there, they
migrated over to the Philippines before getting sponsored over to
America by relatives living in Iowa.
On September 16, 1982 my mom gave birth to me, making me the first to
be born in America. A few months after I was born, my family moved to
California which is where I grew up. For the years to come, there would
be five more additions to the family making a grand total of nine
kiddies. YES, NINE! I have five brothers and three sisters. Oh, we also
have a dog named Rollie!
After high school, I moved to Riverside to attend the University of
California, Riverside. In 2004, I received my bachelor's in Liberal
Studies and then moved to Japan to teach English. After about a year
in
Japan, I moved back to the states to begin my courses in the
Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and Master's Degree program at UC
Davis.
Knowing that my parents sacrificed so much to give us a better life, I
am determined to make something of myself, which is to be the best
teacher I can be. I have always known that i wanted a career that would
allow me to work with children, but was unaware as to which field of
study to pursue. It was not until my first tutoring job that I realized
my future passion, teaching. As a tutor, knowing that I was able to
assist my students by sharing my knowledge and encouraging them brought
me a sense of fulfillment. Through my experience inside classrooms and
my own path in education, my motives in wanting to teach have become
more evident. What drives me to want to pursue this profession is the
opportunity to help those that have been given up on see potential
within themselves, to take part in shaping children into model
citizens, and for those moments when former students return to tell you
how much you have impacted their life. Teaching is a profession that
gives hope and opportunity to students and so I want to become a part
of that process.
