Main Avenue Elementary School

      During the Fall and Winter quarters (August 2005 - March 2006),I had the privilege of student teaching in a third grade, self-contained classroom at Main Avenue Elementary. This school is located in a rural area of north Sacramento. We have a very diverse immigrant population of Russian, Hmong, Lao, Mexican, Fijian, Cambodian,  African American, Chinese and Caucasian students, in grades K through 6. Thirty nine percent of the student body are English Language Learners (ELL). In the past 8 months, I was able to design and execute numerous lessons using Open Court Reading Program, Hampton Brown's Avenues and Scott Foresman California Math. My focus was to provide whole-class and differentiated instruction with a special consideration for ELLs and district and state standards. I returned to this site at the end of May and beginning of June.

Each section of this quilt is made by the students in my third grade class. The symbols on each square represent each students' identity and the border indicate our classroom activities.
