This year has been one of the most
challenging and rewarding all at the same time. With all the
course work and student teaching responsibilities I have definitely
learned a lot about myself.
My long term student teaching was at Gretchen Higgins Elementary School
in Dixon, CA. I was in a SEI (Structured English Immersion)
kindergarten classroom with 20 ELL (English Language Learners).
My students came to school in August without knowing English.
This proved to be a challenge for me since I do not speak
Spanish. I was a little hesitant going into the year because of
this. The language barrier was something I was not prepared for,
but quickly adapted to. I would not change my experience for
anything in the world. I learned so much about myself as a
teacher and as a person in general. My students are all amazing
individuals and are continuing to learn English everyday. My
mentor teaching was so encouraging and supportive in every
aspect. I am so thankful to have been in this class.
My short term student teaching was in a 6th grade class at Willett
Elementary in Davis, CA. Going from kindergarten to 6th grade was
a huge change for me. I spent the first couple of weeks just
observing and learning about 6th grade culture and the subject matter
that my students were learning My mentor teacher knew that it
would be in my best interest to jump right into teaching and learning
the curriculum. After 6 weeks in this class I learned so
much. I never thought I would enjoy teaching 6th grade, but now I
have changed my mind. |
