Honey Bear
Loebel, Gillian  and Time Warnes.  Little Honey Bear and the Smiley Moon.  Pennsylvania: Good Books, 2006

Summary:  In this book, LIittle Honey Bear cannot sleep and notices the moon shinning brightly outside.  He loves it so much he decides to go outside.  When he does, Little Honey Bear encounters his friends Lily Long Ears and Teeny Tiny Mouse.  Togther they decided to go visit the moon and have Moon tea and Moon cakes with him.  They travel togther in the moonlight foest until, all of a sudden, the forest becomes very dark.  They can no longer see the moon and are afraid it has become upset woth them and gone away.  Feelign very scraed, Little Honey Bear's mother appears out of nowhere.  She was very worried about Little Honey Bear and takes him and his friends home for a special Moon supper.  Little Honey explined to his mother that they were trying to meet the moon but then he went away because he became upset with them.  At home, Little Honey Bear's mother expliend to them all that moon did not go away, but that it was just hidden by the clouds.  She then told Little Honey Bear that he does need to go see the moon, but that the moon is always around us.

Recommendation for Parents:  The story displays a unique use of adjectives that will enlighten your child's imgaination and help them understand the importance of descriptive language.  Form names liek Little Honey Bear and Teeny Tiny Mouse to phrases like "a great cloud," your chi;d will see how descriptive language is used to enhance a story's plot and interest.

Recommendation for Other Teachers:  Little Honey Bear and the Smiley Moon is an excellent text to read aloud to your class because it shows the process of story having a plot, climax and ending.  The story enagages students' interest and keeps them wondering whether Little Honey Bear and his friends find the moon.

Personal Note:  I really liked this book and chose it because I thought it conveyed a really sweet message.  Little Honey Bear and his friends are so set on finding the moon that they do not realize it is always around them.  This conveys there are some things in our life that we cherish but cannot always see, such as love.  That is really important to convey to students because it teaches them the importance that just because you cannot see something does not mean that is does not exist. 

Peace
Katz, Karen.  Can You Say Peace? New York:  Henry Holt and Company, 2006.

Summary: 
Can You Say Peace?  starts with sayig today is Peace Day and explains that children all aroudn the world are wishing, hoping, and asking for peace.  It then explains there is more than one way to say peace and shows the different ways peace is said around the world.  For instance, the book goes to India and exlplains peace is expressed as "Shanti."  It continues to go from country to country and explain the different ways people say peace.  FInally, after going through the different ways to say peace, the book concludes with how children all aroudn the world want to be able live their lives while feelign safe.  They may all say it differently, but they all want peace and that is what counts.

Recommendation for Parents:  Can You Say Peace?  is an excellent book for your children to read because it will expose them to the different layers of how pece portrayed aroudn the world.  It willopen your children's eyes to the difference that exist aroudn the world, yet concey that we all want the same thing, peace.  Moreover, it will help your children create the concept of diplomacy and understand the importance of world unity.

Recommendation for Teachers:  Can You Say Peace? is a great book to read to your class because it will expose them to cultural awareness and diversity.  It is important that students understand that people around the world have different wys to express ideas.  This will create awareness of their surroundings and for those culturally diverse that are in their class as well.  Moreover, it will help build class unity.

Personal Note:  I really like Can You Say Peace?  because I am a big advocate for teaching cultural diversity in the classroom.  This book will help promote cultural awareness and will teach students about other cultures around the world.
