Cal
me in cal
I attended the University of California from August 2002 until May 2006 and graduated with a degree in American Studies. My love for Cal did not start when I went to school there however. Cal has been a part of my life for many years through events on campus. For as long as I can remember I have been attending Cal football games with my family. We would go and watch the Bears compeat against many different opponents and have seen the ups and downs of Cal football. There is not a single fall season that I don't have a memory of Cal attached to it. During this time I learned about the history and traditions of this great university and all that it had to offer in addition to sports. When it came time to apply for college there was really only one choice for me. I came to learn even more about the history of the school including the buildings, chancellors, the free speech movement and much, much more. This did not mean however that I was growing out of going to football games, in fact it was quite the opCampanile at Sunsetposite. I joined one of the oldest student groups on campus which revolved around the history and traditions of the school. The University of California Rally Committee was where I found my place in a school with over 30,000 students.
I was able to become even more involved the campus and meet wonderful people along the way. I was able to fire the victory cannon I had heard as a little kid, at football games. I helped paint the Big C on the side of the hill gold when other people would come and paint it something else. I learned the fight songs and went to sporting events, both big and small. However, the event that I came back for over and over again was that of card stunts. Card stunts are done at halftime during a home football game in the student section. Students hold up cards of different colors and make images. These images usually revolve around the schools mascot and colors. This is one of the oldest traditions at Cal and in my senior year I had the honor of being the Director of Stunts and being in charge of this event. UC Card Stunt
For each game I had to plan what images would be shown. Once the images were created and planned it was my job to hold card sortings where the rest of the committee would come and sort the cards by color and organize them into bags containing one of each color. These bags were then put into bundles of fifty. For a stunt to work there needed to be fifty bundles, so all in all there were 2500 bags. To me, doing this job was the best way to finish my years at Cal. I was never more proud to be a California Golden Bear then at those moments when the stunts were performed.
This school means the world to me and I am so happy and honored to have been able to attend. I look forward to creating even more Cal memories.
