I have become a teacher because some of the most influential people in my life have been my teachers. My chemistry teacher taught me that math and chemistry does not have to be just something only chemists use and can be related to everyday life. My history teachers taught me that knowing the past can help us not to make mistakes in the future and that history can be a really fun subject if taught correctly. My English teachers taught me that writing is another method for expressing my thoughts and feelings and that I can write to communicate to others. I believe learning should be a lifelong activity, so students should be taught to have a love for learning instead of feeling like it is a chore. The classroom should be an exciting, energetic, and engaging place where students cannot wait to go. I believe that school life needs to have connection to home and community, which means lessons need to incorporate real life situations, family culture, and pride in our community. The classroom should also be a safe haven where children can express their thoughts and feelings openly without fear of ridicule. I want to create a community of learners who are engaged in learning instead of worrying about what other students might think of them. A teacher should build up their students’ self-esteem, not break it down. It is important to remember that everyone has different learning styles, so teachers must vary their teaching styles to meet the needs of their students. This means that teachers have to use various strategies to make sure everyone has success in learning; this includes EL students, and students with disabilities. I want make a positive difference in my students’ lives and that’s exactly what I intend to do. |
