I
am currently placed in a self-contained second grade classroom at
Bridgeway Island Elementary School. We have twenty enthusiastic
and equally amazing students. The curriculum includes the
California standards-based Open Court Reading Program and Scott
Foresman Mathematics.

Student Authors The
students write a piece weekly which is finalized through the writing
process. After their final drafts have been displayed on the
wall,
each piece is published and illustrated by the student. As the
year
progresses, students are able to see their growth and they take immense
pride in having written and published a book.

Counting to 1,000 activity Every day students use base-10
manipulatives to count up to 1,000 in increments of 20. Students build
the number which they are working on using the table shown above and
base-10 manipulatives. In doing this, students are able to form a
strong number sense by building the number one by one and regrouping as
necessary.
