I believe education should be accessible to all students and that it is the teacher's job to make sure that this happens. If this is not possible within the classroom for a student then it is the reponsibility of the teacher to be an effective advocate in order to help the student get the services they need to allow the student to be succesful. The ideal learning environment for a student is one in which school work is challenging but attainable with regard to a student's level of ability at a given time. Within the classroom I believe in order for students to effectively learn they need to feel safe physically as well as emotionally. I believe one of the best ways to foster this type of environment is to define clear expectations and boundaries for the students in order for them to know what to expect in the classroom. Learning invovles not only successes but mistakes and in order to feel comfortable making the necessary mistakes to grow there has to be a sense of community among the students and the teacher as well as mutual repect for each other. With the continual increase in cultural diversity in the classroom it is necessary for a teacher to incorporate the various cultures present in the classroom curriculum. I think one of the best ways to do that is to involve the families of the students in the classroom. Building this bridge sets the stage for a necessary relationship between school and home environments that needs to exist in order for students to reach their full potential. I believe the classroom should not be a place where meaningless routines take place but rather a place where meaningful connections are contin- uously made to the world outside of school. In order for a curriculum to have meaning, students must be able to see why they should know the information in the first place and how it can be used to lead them into the future they desire. |
