| My Teaching
Philosphy |
I
grew-up in the
beach town of Santa Cruz, California.
As a young girl I loved reading and doing science projects as much as running around outside playing with my friends. My senior year of high school I lived with a Costa Rican family in a small coffee-farming community outside of Alajuela, Costa Rica. I attended a language school and developed fluency in Spanish. After returning I moved to Davis to attend the University of California, Davis. Experiencing the poverty of Costa Rica sparked my interest in understanding social inequality. To develop that understanding I studied Sociology and Spanish. My third year at UC Davis, I studied at the University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Argentina where I learned about the country while practicing my Spanish. Upon my return, I worked as a program assistant for Freedom from Hunger. I was intrigued by the way education was used to lift women out of poverty and give them a better life. After graduating from UC Davis I decided to pursue my interest in education while developing fluency in French as an English Language Teaching Assistant at a High School in Le Mans, France. From the first day, I was given the keys to my own classroom and a schedule with ten different classes to teach and no curriculum. It was a fun challenge, and I learned a lot about myself and about teaching. When I moved back to the Sacramento area I decided to work in K-6 classrooms as a substitute teacher. From the first day I entered the classroom I was excited to be teaching again. Because of my love of languages and culture I pursued a bilingual cross-cultural teaching credential at UC Davis. Before starting the program I spent the summer as a third grade summer school teacher. It was great to have my own room and develop my own curriculum again. I had a lot of fun with my students. This year I have learned so much about how to help every student learn and achieve to the best of their ability. Working as a student teacher in a second grade and fifth grade classroom have given me a wide range of experiences and ideas that I will take to my future classrooms. When I am not teaching or studying I enjoy reading, playing the piano, cooking and participating in a wide variety of outdoor activities from hiking and biking to climbing and camping. In June I will graduate with my teaching credential, get married and settle in West Virginia with my husband who is currently living in the Lewisburg area. I am looking forward to dedicating myself to the learning of my students |
