I have had
many experiences with children and students from elementary to middle
school age before working towards a teaching credential at UC Davis.
These experiences include volunteering in elementary classrooms,
working
for
a before and after school childcare program and then substituting at
the middle school level. I have come away from all my
experiences in these classrooms
recognizing that all my experiences are new chances for learning and I
intended to do my very best with every new idea and situation that I
encounter for which to further my teaching proficiency. I like to believe I approach all my life relationships with sincerity, curiosity and humor. I feel that finding humor, engaging ideas and exciting possibilities from outside of myself is really my foremost goal in life. I also wish to serve somehow as a conduit for others to reach beyond themselves in the same kind of way. I believe that children are a great source for achieving this goal by developing what they can already do and also challenge them to use their creativity to express their individuality. My interests vary widely in art and literature and music and sports and food and just about anything. I am always willing to try new things and visit new locations. Right now I’m learning piano, slowly, but I seem to be better at collecting instruments. I bought a sitar on a whim and basically keep it around because I think it looks cool. I want to better myself in all areas of interest that I have previously noted. Traveling is also an interest of mine and I aim to travel often. My most recent trips have been to England, France, Germany, and Prague. My to-do reading list is huge and I tend to always be reading many books at one time. My current undertaking is Don Quixote, The Brothers Karamozov and also finishing up Frank McCourt’s memoirs in backwards order. I am enjoying each book tremendously and I have learned quite enjoyably from Mr. McCourt’s autobiographies on the subject of teaching and life in general. His books are an inspiration for me. Being a teacher I do not believe is the end of my own learning and education. There are still many subjects and skills, such as cooking and mechanics, that I want a firm grasp on. I try and stay up on current events and subjects of general and particular interest to me. I enjoy a variety documentaries and how-to style books. I believe as a teacher that everything I would do and learn builds on itself and has great potential to be used back in the classroom where appropriate. |
