Teaching Philosophy

I see myself as a coach, hired by the students, to assist them in becoming the best teachers that they can be.  I encourage my students to think deeply about their actions as a  teacher, to consider the impact of their actions on their students and to monitor their students learning.  At the end of each day, I want my students to be able to describe how their students are in some way different than they were when the day began.

In terms of science teaching, I am a strong believer in the credo-Activity BEFORE Vocabulary (ABV). By engaging students in an activity first, you provide the same context for all students regardless of their science, cultural, or linguistic backgrounds. I encourage my students to engage their students in inquiry through thinking and questioning.  Given the accountability and time constraints of the typical California classroom today, I feel it is unrealistic to assume that student teachers will have the opportunity or the ability to engage in open inquiry. Instead, I encourage them to use the ideas of inquiry to promote logical critical thinking related to their content.
